What fabric for custom pram/buggy hoods?

DH and I have bought a second hand pram and we're considering making a custom hood for it as the hood is faded through use. What fabric would be best to use? Is it okay to use a thick cotton or canvas and then waterproof it? Would we waterproof it before stitching the whole thing together with the lining?

I'm wanting to do same, 100% polyester water proof fabric I've found is what needed to be used. Hope this helps :)

Bearing mind that you'll probably need a full waterproof pram cover for downpours (you can buy generic brand ones from jojo maman or mothercare) I would get a reasonably heavy duty cotton and waterproof it once stitched. Maybe without a pattern in case the waterproofing causes a colour run?

The pram hoods are more for wind and sun blocking, occasional light showers so maybe blackout lining?
