Best yarn for premature baby blanket

I am about to knit a blanket for a friend's very premature baby. He is lying on a blanket in an incubator so it is to go under him rather than on top.

I've had a look online and it sounds as though wool isn't recommended for potential allergy reasons.

I'm not sure what the best material to go for is - I was thinking something natural like cotton or bamboo would be more breatheable but they aren't usually as soft as artificial yarns can be are they?

Has anyone done something similar and what yarn did you use?

Can anyone recommend some really, really super soft yarn in DK that isn't wool please?

My mum knitted blankets for all of her grandchildren using a yarn called Flutterby from James C Brett. she buys it online from Derramores.

It is synthetic. I believe it's made from recycled material but it's unbelievably soft. I'm not in the UK and passed on the details to the midwives here because they were so impressed with it. I wanted natural fibres really but this is lovely stuff and great colours too we've got her working on one for us.

My ds and dd both spent time in incubators only it.

Bamboo is lovely and soft. Can you go to a shop and stroke a few or do you need recommendations?

Baby silk and bamboo dk by sublime is nice and soft.

Sirdar Baby Bamboo is lovely and soft, although not in a 'fluffy' way. It also comes in a wide range of colours which is nice if you're not a fan of traditional baby pastels.

Sirdar baby bamboo is lovely. It is my first choice of yarn for a baby blanket.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions. I love bamboo too and I think it is antibacterial too which is presumably a bonus for a little preemie. The Sirdar version is blended with wool so I had better avoid that which is a real shame as I do love the range of colours it comes in.

I hadn't spotted that the Sublime one mentioned doesn't have wool in it so thank you for flagging that one up.

Mrsnec - thank you for your recommendation too - it does look really, really soft! Very much hope your DS and DD are fully recovered now - it must have been a very scary time for your family.
