Unorthodox way of fitting a sleeve

I had an eighties pattern that I wanted to use BUT it had those huge eighties shoulders.
Firstly, I made the bodice and and made the shoulder seam slope (like a humans).
Sleeves are sitting there with a huge 'head'...not what I want. Threads and other sites are no help, nor are all my pattern books.
So I got a piece of string and started at the side seam of the bodice, marked the notches, dots, centres etc.
Took the bit of string and pinned it onto the sleeve head at the notches. Laid the string out across the other markings, chalked a line ......and cut!
About 3cm off the sleeve head.

Is this going to work?

Well if you have cut it the only way to find out is when you set it in.

If you have reduced the amount at the top shoulder seam then yes you would need to reduce the amount on the pattern or you will be in gathered territory.

When I used to make blouses in the 70's/80's there was a lot of easement in the sleeve shoulder anyway

Noooo that is wrong! You need to redistribute the excess across the sleeve head.

Draw a horizontal line just above where the sleeve notches are.. draw a vertical line down the centre of the sleeve until it reaches your horizontal line.

Slash down vertical line and across.horizontal lines. The horizontal pines need to be cut from the middle outwards.Don't go all the way across the horizontal line. Leave a hair width join at the sleeve edge.

Now, bring the pieces inward, until you get an approximate measurement for the armhole. rememebr to leave about 2-3 com ease.

You will have an odd shaped sleeve head now, with all the bits overlapping and under lapping. Draw a smooth curve round all the overlapped pieces to create a new sleeve head

Hope this makes a bit of sense.

And you don't really just make the bodice shoulder seam slope! You need to take the excess out properly

Well it worked!

I admit that it was a total bodge . I was dealing with the material and not the pattern and just wanted to crack on with it.
The material is a very stiff linen so I knew that needed minimal ease.

The pattern is a very old Simplicity 9875 and has nothing going for it apart from the neckline.

Oranges, I really would like to do things properly but sometimes always find it very hard to understand some pattern cutting books. I do deserve a reprimand!
It was also a two piece sleeve.
However, I do rather like my lightbulb version
