Has Anyone Used Drops Muscat?

I want to crochet a couple of blankets for my DNephew and his lovely wife who are expecting a summer baby. Has anyone used Drops Muscat? Is it splitty? I crochet quite fast and get frustrated when the yarn splits. I like the colour choices with the Muscat - there are more bright colours than the Drops Merino Extra Fine as I'd like to make one of the blankets in similar colours to the Mamas and Papas Gingerbread blanket - but in crochet.

If you don't recommend Muscat what would you recommend? I'll probably do something in either Stylecraft or Sirdar Snuggly too.

Hmm. Not used it but it looks splitty. A friend likes drops cotton light though. I'm not a huge cotton fan anyway.

I'm using stylecradt special DK for my crochet but I gues syou know about that . It's pretty good for acrylic

THe looking under yarns on ravelry and you'll get everyones comment on the muskat

Thank you both. I was afraid it was splitty. I bought Drops Paris and ended up giving it to my sister - in over 40 years of knitting and crocheting I have never found a cotton yarn that I like. I love the Merino a Extra Fine but it can work out very expensive to make a couple of blankets.

I think I've used the Muscat before and I don't recall it being very splitty. I'd have to go look in my stash to see if I can find the left overs.

I certainly don't remember it being as bad as the Paris or Drops Cotton Light!

I absolutely love the Drops Muskat. I've got about five projects on the go at the moment and I'm using it for all of them Grin

It's a little bit splitty but not terrible, I find it lovely to work with.

Did you find any leftovers Soupy?

In my head the arguments are that it isn't too expensive and the colours are lovely AND the blanket will be cotton so nice and cool for the summer but I must have bought cotton yarn every year for at least the last ten years and I've not made anything yet.

OK, ivefound it and tested it. Doing TC with a 4mm hook at a decent speed (I don't think I'm a fast hooker) it is splitty but nowhere near as splitty as the Paris/light which I can't crochet at any speed at all without losing single threads off the hook.

With a 4.5mm hook it is less splitty.

I can stick some in the post to you to try if you'd like - there's some dark grey that won't be enough to make anything with. PM Me. :)

The only cotton that I like using is Lily Sugar n Cream, but it's quite a heavy aran yarn so not great for things that need a thinner yarn.

The best cotton I've used is Stylecraft cotton classique.

I'm currently knitting with drops muscat and would say it is very splitty and wouldn't consider using it for crochet. I find Rico Creative Cotton Aran cheap and nice to crochet with.
(btw i've been a mumsnet lurker for 4 years and set up a username just to respond to this thread!)

I found the Rico splitty when I crocheted a blanket with it. More splitty than the MUscat.

I wonder if it depends on how a person crochets? Otherwise it's weird how we all find them different.

Thanks SoupDragon, I've always been a bit scared of it after reading too much AIBU!
I knit fast but crochet slowly, so maybe that's it? On the loveknitting website it lists the Rico for knitting and crochet and the Muscat for just knitting which made me think they must be different? Or maybe just an editor error!

Arts and Crafts is fairly gentle :) especially compared to AIBU!

I don't knit so can't compare the two.

I've found different types of hooks can affect how splitty the cottons are too, weirdly.

I love the gingerbread blanket! Lucky baby.

Welcome bkg - I'm honoured that you joined to respond to this thread.

Thank you all for the responses and yarn recommendations - I've got lots of tabs open to look at all the different cottons. I'm going to do an ABC blanket in a solid colour first and give myself a bit more dithering time Smile

I crochet and knit with bamboo hooks and needles - working with metal ones makes my hands sore. I've tried a couple of brands of ergonomic hook and couldn't get on with them. I would say I have fewer yarn issues since changing to bamboo - I wonder if they absorb oil from my skin and this makes them smoother than metal. I have 3 different 4mm bamboo hooks but use one more than the others and I get quite cross with myself if I misplace it and have to work with one of the others Blush

Soupy thank you for posting a sample to me. I'll let you know when it arrives.

Just remembered that Drops Cotton Merino is really lovely to work with. I don't know if that would suit your project?
