Making a poncho - but it's gone horribly wrong

I had a pattern for a poncho for a 3yo it was 2 rectangles (each twice the length as the width) with the end sewn to the side of the other one in an almost morbius way

So I made it bigger & it's a disaster - so I need to make a blanket/shawl/cloak with little bits of material I've cut up & I feel a pratt!!

What fabric did you use? I have plenty of wraps which are like that with the two rectangles joined for half the longest length. It may not work as a joined together poncho due to the volume though.

Fleece

30cms by 60cms works fine (fits 3 yo)
40cms by 70cms also works fine (fits 5 yo)

But 50cms by 100cms works as an evening bolero length poncho for an adult (size 14)

So I have no idea how the bloody proportions work??
