Knitting question - Cast off in pattern

I'm nearing the end of a lacy scarf and am a bit confused about what I should do when casting off. The pattern is basically 3 rows stocking stitch and one row slipping and knitting together and all sorts. Instructions say I should finish after 32nd row (which is the last of the stocking stitch rows) then cast off in pattern.

Will I really be doing casting off at the same time as passing 2 slipped stitches over, knitting 2 together etc? I imagine that would make for a very bulky final row, but presumably will be the only way to give that end of the scarf the zigzag edge?

Yes knit each stitch as per the pattern and then cast off each stitch as it is knitted.

Yes, that looks like some variant of the old Shetland Print O The Wave/ Old Shale pattern. I've made scarves like that in the past and started and ended with a few rows of garter st which gives a pretty ending but too late now if you didn't have garter st at the start. Worth bearing in mind if you want to make another, and don't like the look of the cast off edge.

Often shawls etc knitted in this pattern then had an edging knitted sideways so it didn't matter so much. It looks lovely!

All sorted! The main problem I had casting off in pattern was when pattern said K1, yfwd, K1 the yfwd created another stitch on the RH needle, but impossible to cast off using that. The alternative was to work three stitches, but I didn't know how to cast off using three. Maverick that I am, I ignored the pattern and cast off in stocking stitch and hey presto the edge was still wavy! Much appreciate your input, both.

Glad it worked out. Ooh I see what you mean about that yfwd. Yes, that's a weird pattern. I'd have written it with half a dozen rows of garter st either end...
