I am a complete novice at all things crafty but would like to try something with 3yo DS as Christmas gifts for grandparents.

Can I just buy normal plain plates and mugs from the supermarket? Do I need special ceramic paints (seem to be sold out everywhere in red and green!) Or some posts on Pinterest seen to suggest you can just use acrylic paint then bake in the oven?

Any advice appreciated (,including how to stop ,3yo DS getting paint everywhere!)

Thanks

Go to a pottery craft place that does it all for you?

If you live in Hants there's a great one I can recommend. On the INSET day this week when I went with DD2, there were loads of Mums and babies getting their footprints done.
They were special paints onto unglazed items. Then the items were going to be dipped in glaze and fired.

I would defo recommend a specialist place. We did footprints when my son was a baby... 4 years if daily dish washing and they are still brilliant!
Worked out about £10 a mug.
