Can anyone recommend one?
I've had a look on ravelry and like the look of the cara but think it might be too bulky - want something cosy, squishy and warm to snuggle in.

How about ma non troppo? Asa Tricosa's ziggurat patterns are amazing - all knitted in one piece from the top down, a bit mind-bending at first but wonderful once you get the hang of them. I'm now on my third. You could do a less cowl-y polo neck on this one quite easily. And if you didn't fancy stripes just do it plain.

That's beautiful - but I'm not very good with mohair. What could I use instead?

Anything with the same gauge would work pretty well. But have a look on yarnsub.com
It's a website that recommends yarn substitutions. Hasn't failed me yet!

I agree about the mohair - there's a yarn suggestions page on Ravelry here which mostly seems to be light fingering or heavy lace. So something quite fine instead -- eg Rowan fine lace which is wool alpaca and lovely to knit with.
