camel outfit ???

this year ds1 and ds2 were casted as a camel and a star in their nursery's christmas play. parents are expected to provide a suitable costume, and the star is not such a problem, as ds1 was a pearl 2 years ago, and i have jsut modified his outfit to fit ds2, but the camel...
anyone any creative ideas?? i thought i'd go and look for some cheap (2nd hand) brown/yellowish towels and put something together from them, but i am not sure how to make the bumps (actually: do camels have 1 or 2?? ).

And my friend is moaning about having to do a Herod costume...

I'd go for simplicity and stick to one bump... (probably authentic, the camel I rode in Jordan a few years back only had one hump). I would make the basic outfit and then add the hump afterwards - cut out the shape you want (it will probably need to be two or maybe 3 pieces sewn together to make it easier to stuff), sew it to the back of the outfit except for for a small gap, and then stuff it with the contents of an old pillow or cushion. This is really difficult to explain without drawing things!

Blow up a balloon to stuff the hump?

Dromedary camels have one hump, Bactrian (sp?) have 2 - just like their initial letters.

You'll need a tail too. And ears. and get your child to spit occasionally (maybe needs some chewing tobacco?).

NSONNNSOAB () pmsl at chewing tobacco! dh has got some boxes of swedish chewing tobacco, i'm sure that will do.. good idea: balloon for the bumps! we just bought in loads of them as ds1 and 2 have their birthdays in two weeks time. i can 'borrow' some of them for the outfit.

Just keep the kids away from sharp objects before the show or you might have a deflated camel

if you go to a fabric shop (or john lewis habby if you have got one near to you) then they do various animal coloured synthetic fuffy material. Cant think what its called .Like fleece but more furry and substantial. But very light so maybe better than towelling.I used it to make caveman costumes and they were fab.It is very cheap and you wont need much.
Its also very easy to sew by hand if necessary and doesnt need any hemming you can just cut it to shape.
I would buy some wadding for the humps because thats nice and light and also cheap as chips. The kind of thing you stuff teddies with

lorina, thanks for the tip to go to John Lewis. I did and bought the most fabulous fake camel fur! I started on the outfit yesterday and have so far only cut out the fabric, not put it together yet, but it is v.simple so i don't think it will take me long. i still need to figure out what to do with the bumps... last year ds1 was a sheep, and my mum made him the suit (as i was in and out of hospital having ds2 ), and she was so smart to save the (improvised) pattern she used, so i just copied it, but made it a bit bigger. Just add some bumps, adn bob's your uncle.... i hope.
