Teaching my DD to knit - when I haven't got a clue

My lovely 7y/o daughter has more creativity in her than the rest of the familly put together and is desperate for me to show her how to knit. Its something Id love to do with her rather than just farm her off to a friends distant aunt, and wondered if anyone could offer any hints tips or advice to begin, and I mean absolute idiots guide. YouTube? Book? Hmm, thanks in advance!

Go to a class together? There are quite a few sewing, knitting, embroidery classes around atm as those skills are "in". It could be a nice thing to do together and you would both learn something new :)

You tube has fantastic how to videos from crafters.

have you considered crochet? It's easier to manipulate for smaller hands and pretty patterns are easier to create and it's more forgiving of mistakes.... also can make little toys and show off place mats etc for friends and family very quickly, whereas knitting (which i am much better at) shows mistakes and takes longer to get to "show off" pieces

Dd is learning well with help from me and a galt first knitting set that she received as a gift.

The Ladybird book of knitting used to be the best, if you can find one.

There are a lot of knitting groups around - you could both go and learn together.

Albeit she sometimes has a go on her own whilst I'm cooking and comes in the kitchen beaming proudly showing me what she's done, and I then tell her to leave it with me so I can look properly and frantically have to unpick and reknit 5 rows

knittinghelp.com has great videos, covering the basics as well as more advanced techniques. I've knitted for years but it's one of the first places I look if I need a reminder of how to do something.

Place marking. I can cast on and off and knit and purl but don't know how to increase, decrease or follow a pattern.

There's a great little book called "kids learn to knit" and one called "kids learn to crochet" too by Lucinda Guy. You can get it on Amazon. I was taught to knit by my mum as a child. She was a knitting expert and many times rescued dropped stitches for me. I can still knit but taught myself to crochet about two years ago. I much prefer it. No chance of dropping all your stitches. I like to make amigurumi animals, bags and blankets. I taught my dd to knit and she made some scarfs with large knitting needles that worked up quickly.
