crocheters - where do you keep your wool?

... and hooks etc? I've just been taught the basics but I'm loving it and it's keeping me from eating so much crap on a night time

My wool and hooks are currently just sat on the sideboard.

I need something to keep them in and wondered if anyone had any ideas other than the ikea box I'm thinking of pinching from ds' room

Also - if you take your crochet out and about do you take it in anything? I stuffed mine in my handbag for a longish journey in the car but it'll get scruffy if I keep doing that!

I have a chest of drawers that I store my yarn in (I have an embarrassing amount)
Whatever I am working on at the moment lives in a lidded box in the living room, it used to be in a plastic trug tub but we now have a cat who steals it if she can.
For when I'm out and about I have a small canvas bag that I put in my current project, hook and scissors.
My hooks all live in a glass jar on the mantle piece.

A whole chest of drawers?? Haha - dp is moaning now and I only have 6 balls! Haha!

In a wardrobe hanging shelf thing, and in random plastic bags for taking it out.
I have a lot of woolBlush

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/06/2015 22:09

I keep my yarn in the cupboard under the stairs - there is just enough room for the Hoover and the ironing board Blush

I keep my current project in my work bag by the sofa and the extra yarn for the same project in a bag next to the sofa. The bag was bought by my DDs for my birthday and has "ballsack" printed on it. I'm a juvenile sorry

I have a silk pocket to keep my hooks in that lives in my work bag. I also have a fold up pocket with hooks, wool needles and scissors in that also lives in my work bag, along with a plastic box with a tape measure, stitch holders, stitch markers etc.

merrymouse · 13/06/2015 22:11

In a basket.

TheNinjaGooseIsHooking · 14/06/2015 09:57

my yarn lives in ikea boxes and then anything I'm working on goes in a cotton tote bag. Mine says 'knit fast die warm' Woolly Grin

My wool stash lives in a big fabric holdall in the bottom of my wardrobe. Small current projects are taken out and about in a canvas drawstring bag, which also contains a clear plastic pencil case with spare hooks, tape measure, scissors etc. If it's a tiny project with a small ball of wool it just gets squeezed into the same pencil case. Got another one of these with bits I only need occasionally such as googly eyes, brooch fittings etc. Also have a large canvas shoulder bag that I use for bigger ongoing projects (blankets etc).

RoosterCogburn · 14/06/2015 10:26

Blush Yes, a whole chest of drawers, and it's jammed in.
I've even got a bag on top at the moment because I can't squeeze it in.

mayfridaycomequickly · 14/06/2015 11:24

Oh god, wool is going to take over my house eventually isn't it!

I've got a chest/blanket box in the middle of the sitting room that we use as a coffee table. I have got a rather large stash of yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks and cross stitch stuff.

DH can't moan, his stash of timber takes up most of the garage!

In the footstool, but its getting a bit crowded. Plan on setting up a container in under stairs cupboard for less frequently used yarns.

SocksRock · 14/06/2015 19:33

Umm, everywhere... I have a 8 cube expedit that is full, a couple of large storage boxes under the bed, a bag in my car that hasn't made it to the house yet, and a large storage cube in the living room for my current stuff. And half a sofa of WIPS.

Large zip-loc food bags are perfect for taking a project in your handbag. I leave the ball of yarn in the bag while I'm crocheting to stop it from rolling around all over the place.

I have a lot of Stylecraft Special DK, which I keep in a pop-up laundry basket in my sewing room. I also have three clear plastic lidded boxes, one with thinner than DK, one with DK and aran weight and one with thicker than aran.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/06/2015 19:48

Knitter chipping in, hope you don't mind Smile all of mine is in two old unfabulous, Pampers nappies cardboard boxes Sad and my needles etc and current project hang in a canvas tote shopper in the cupboard under the stairs - away from the cats Grin

I'd love to buy a gorgeous pottery bowl thingy to store/display my nicer stuff though if anyone knows if such a thing exists please!

BitterChocolate · 14/06/2015 20:02

I recommend keeping your crochet hooks in something, perhaps a pencil case or a roll up make-up brush holder, even a mug or small vase if they are on a shelf. Hooks will escape at any opportunity, give them an inch and they'll hurl themselves down the back of the sofa.

Also, I have some small labels (the card type on a bit of string), if I stop working on something mid-way through then I write the hook size on the label and attach it to the last stitch.

mayfridaycomequickly · 14/06/2015 21:17

Wow - some of you have loads!!

Thanks Miaow I'm not up to making anything fancy that I need to mark stitches for yet wonders what I'd need to mark them for... I'm literally just at the jar covers / single colour scarf stage!

Out of interest - where do you all buy your vast amounts of wool? I've bought a couple of crappy balls in Asda and some on a stall in town but it's all acrylic. Nowhere locally that I know of sells it!

OP posts:
SecretSpy · 14/06/2015 21:24

mayday, it's all happening online. unless you've got a local wool shop or market stall that sells it.

aldi has it sometimes if you like acrylic.

and get yourself on Ravelry and be prepared to lose days.

SecretSpy · 14/06/2015 21:26

For wool from sheeps Grin loveknitting, deramores, wool warehouse, kemps woolshop, and Aileens Woolshop on ebay are all good for a browse.
