novice trying to hem sequinned skirt

hello, hoping you crafty folk can advise me on this...

I bought a beautiful gold sequinned skirt from ebay that I want to wear to a wedding in July. It's too long and I don't really have the money for a dressmaker to take it up for me.

Is it possible to hem it myself?! And if so, how?! I don't have a sewing machine so I wondered if I could literally just fold up the extra 2 inches and use a tack stitch...does that sound like a terrible idea?

I probably will only wear it to the wedding so if it doesn't last more than a day (and evening!!) that's ok.

Thanks in advance!

Can you post a photo of the bottom of the dress ? So I can get a better idea of how to do it.

I'm afraid I don't have the skirt with me, it's at my dad's house but i will try to describe it;

it's got 'normal' sized sequins (ie not those big disco ones- looking on the internet they're maybe 6 or 8mm?) the same shade of gold on each side.

they seem to be in vertical rows v close together but not sure if they're individually stitched (I doubt it). So I don't want to cut any of the fabric off in case it all falls to pieces!

Here is a pic of something similar (in my mind anyway!)

ps the fabric is NOT stretchy if that makes a difference

it's a skirt, not a dress but I doubt that makes a difference when hemming. this is the same sort of sequin size/ arrangement

actually, looking closer, the sequins in that pic are a bit more 'random' than those on my skirt. the skirt sequins are more uniform in vertical rows

So sorry but really not sure. Have a look to see how it is hemmed at the moment.
Off the top of my head I would zigzag round the skirt 1/2 inch below the desired length and then cut off the excess and hem . The zigzag stitch will stop the sequins unravelling .

Ok thank you anyway Smile

May be able to rope SIL into helping as she has experience in this sort of thing!

Good luck Grin

I would draw a line in pen and sew a piece of bias binding on the line on the good side. Turn it over so that the binding can't be seen and do tiny little hand stitches all the way round.

lavendersun · 01/06/2015 06:25

Just noticed you don't have a machine and that you only want to wear it once - binding might be OTT then!

The task has been shoved into SIL's lap Grin

Thanks though!
