Is is possible to satin stitch a circle without it curling??

Just that really. I've got a motif from an old tshirt that needs appliquéd onto a new tshirt. Never done it before so I've been practicing on scraps.

Everytime I've done the satin stitch It makes the circle go 'wavy'. Is there a way around this or am I just better doing a neat zigzag?

Machining or hand-stitching?

Sorry - interrupted by LO - either way, if you iron on either bondaweb or some fusible interfacing to the motif before sewing, it should hold its shape in theory!

Has your machine got a blanket stitch? After practising to do a banner for our quilt group I abandoned satin stitch and even zig zag and did blanket stitch because it was the only stitch that didn't cause waves. I did Bondaweb the letters down too. I wonder if it would work better if I hadn't used it actually.

If I had had the time it might have been worth trying to play with the machine's tension - maybe the waves were caused by the tension being too tight? Thankfully somebody with more time than me took it off my hands and did the blanket stitch instead.

I will check on the blanket stitch (I have a Janome 525s) but not sure if it does...

I did wonder about the tension as well but I tried it on 3 and 4 and seemed to make no difference. But then maybe I haven't found the matching combination yet!

Oops...just had a thought that maybe 4 was higher tension than 3??. Still getting to know my sewing machine (and sewing in general!) so I really should read the manual more...

Use Bondaweb on the appliqué and a stabiliser, like Stitch and Tear, under the fabric.
