Tilly and the Buttons - elasticated skirt with shirring idea

I wondered if anyone had added shirring to the top of a skirt or made the simple elastic skirt with shirring that is a free download at T&TB.

I quite like simple long elasticated skirts, for summer days (how carefree that sounds Smile) , but I don't like the bulky bit at the top where the elastic does its job.

So, can an adult wear shirred garments without looking odd and if you have done anything like it does it eliminate the bulk?

It would use a lot less fabric than cutting on the bias, which is what I normally do. I have a few metre lengths of fabric that I could do this with, but that aren't long enough for my bias cut skirts.

Thank you wise people.

what is the name of the skirt on TATB? I'm currently in the process of (trying to!!) making the picnic blanket skirt!

I like the idea, I have a shirred skirt upstairs (orange Grin ) that I wear with a wide belt and vest top in summer.

Suppose the belt adds bulk but the shirring is more comfortable imo than a thick piece of elastic.

Any chance of a linky? Smile

Orange you say Grin????

This is where I got the idea from

I made a simple elastic waisted skirt the other week. I might add the shirting then if you think it will be ok.

I have done it!, 8 rows of shirring. I loved the skirt, just not the sack of potatoes looking waistband.

It worked really well, looks more fitted, am now happy to wear it. Smile

Dh did the school run and I took the opportunity to sew!

That was fast!

I had to leave on a work trip this morning ... wearing the newly shirred skirt!

I prefer it to the unshirred version, but think I prefer bias cut if I am honest. Maybe I will make A line zipped versions with my metre lengths as I am not sure than non-bias cut elasticised work that well for me.

It has been riding up a bit at the waist, didn't do that before!
