Knitting patterns question

I'm a fairly confident beginner knitter and made a few things, but I get confused in patterns. I have been trying to do a baby cardigan where it has a repeat pattern of "holes" that make V shapes at regular intervals. Apologies for not knowing proper name with dropped and passing over stitches.

All fine, but then it starts saying to drop of x amount of stitches on each row and to continue pattern, but of course the repeat pattern is starting in a differnt place! Have tried to count the cast off stitches and then carry in the pattern in the same space but it's very confusing when you have slip a stitch then knit then passed stitch over to know where you are supposed to be counting from!

The photo in the pattern shows the pattern all the way up but have tried and failed 4 times know so any hints would be appreciated. Hopefully someone will know what I am on about :)

stitch markers are your friends here.

Put a marker between each set of holes. Then you can see if you have enough left after your decreases to make the holes.

If you don't have enough stitches, just work the part in stocking stitch. It will be less noticeable than you think, as it will be next to the sleeve.
