Crochet cushion covers - nice yarn suggestions or recommendations please

At some point this year I am going to redecorate our living room. I'd really like to crochet some cushions.
Can you recommend some yarn types or brands that have a good range of colour and will wash and wear well?

I don't mind spending a bit more than my usual stylecraft special as I'm hoping they'll last!

Rico Creative Cotton is good, with a good range of colours. It's Aran so a bit quicker to finish projects too :)

Would cotton be better than wool, synthetic, merino etc?

I don't really know the merits of each type of fibre
