Craft foam sheet stuff...seemed like a good idea

So, LO is obsessed with the Twirlywoos (cbeebies). No merchandise available until at least the summer, and when you're 3, that might as well be forever. I decided to try and make some of the characters. The bodies are fairly easy to make from fleece, but they have stripy legs that I stupidly decided to try and make from craft foam sheets. The stuff won't go through the sewing machine (with or without dropping the feed dogs), if hand-sewn you can't pull thread tight or it tears...grrrrr.

So, just wondering, for next time (hollow laugh) what should I have used?!

What about some cheap stripy socks? Sew down an edge as wide as you need, trim, turn out and stuff. Might have to be flexible with colours, so maybe that wouldn't pass muster with your super fan?! I'd caveat this by saying that this sort of thing often works in my head and then I find myself sitting at the sewing machine late into the night cursing my 'cunning plan'! Cool idea to make your own - she will have unique toys. You'll end up with a queue of toddlers making requests!

Can you Knit or crochet, you could make the legs like that or there is a knitting pattern on eBay for the whole toy. Think the same seller has some finished toys for sale too. Sorry I can't link Sad not sure how

If by "unique" we mean wonky, then yes she will! Knit my own, or hacking up socks are both great ideas, thank you Smile

Felt would be another option. small squares are fairly cheap so you could sew the stripes together.
