Best sewing book for a novice

Yes I admit, I am an avid Sewing Bee fan, and now want to learn to sew! (I wonder how many new sewers the Sewing Bee is responsible for? Quite a few I imagine!)

I don't know anything really, apart from doing some basic sewing on my mum's machine, which she has leant me.

Can anyone recommend a really good book that will teach me all the basics and then some more advanced stuff too? I'm really keen to have a go.

The sewing bee books are worth a look, the lastest is probably the best. It has patterns with simple designs to more advanced. Tilly and the buttons has a book, great if your shape is similar to her's. Colette patterns are great for beginners as they come with a booklet and lots of on line help.

I was given the current Sewing Bee book as a gift - nicely presented - lovely photos etc.. But not as good as the Readers Digest sewing book, which is even better if you can get an old edition.

I think that the pretty photos in SB will inspire a lot of people, but that you will learn a lot more from something like the Readers Digest book.

Craftsy have online classes for beginners too which might help if you feel that learning from watching would be easier.

Depends how much you feel you can take on board really.

Also, all of the new pattern makers seem to have free downloads which are simple, and they have detailed instructions which makes them even easier.
