Is this fabric suitable for dressmaking?

I want to make a dress for my toddler and I've got a pattern from Simplicity. It lists the materials you can use on the back of the pattern including cotton and cotton blends.

I've found this really nice Hungry Caterpillar print cotton here but I'm not sure whether it's quilting fabric and not suitable for dressmaking. Any ideas anyone?

I'll try to contact the shop next week to ask but would love some guidance on how to find nice dress fabrics online.

TIA

It's linked to the whole range of hc fabric OP...which one is it?

What style of dress is it OP. Some of the quilting fabrics are not soft enough to drape well ime. There is a shelf of cottons that I always avoid at my fabric shop, they just feel 'harsh'.

Having said that they are fairly cheap at £6 ish a metre and who knows what they would do if they were washed (I am probably just too lazy to try!).

I would e-mal them, it does look like a quilting site though doesn't it.

I emailed them and they replied very quickly to say the fabrics were fine for dressmaking Smile. Now I just have to choose which one I like best.

When it comes to cutting out, treat it as a 'fabric with nap' or you will get quite a few upside down caterpillars.

Thanks Dutchoma, I'll do that.

Thanks for starting this thread Future - very useful. Trouble with buying online is that you can't feel the fabric, but there is almost nowhere to buy fabric irl. I'm going to Dunelm later this week and our branch has quite a lot of fabric, so Im holding off buying online in the hope of finding something there for little dresses.

I've used a couple of those fabrics, although for cushions not dresses. It would be fine for a dress. If you are thinking of the fabric with lots of tiny caterpillars on (3281) then the caterpillars are every which way on it, they don't all face the same direction.

Would make a wonderful dress in fact. I'm not sure my 3yo DS would get the wear out of it that the effort of making it would warrant!
