Invisible zips

I've just put in my first ever one. I used a standard zipper foot, as I don't have an "invisible zipper foot". It looks OK to me any wobbles are user error but can anyone tell me whether there is something amazing about the other kind of foot that makes it worth buying? Thanks!

I have an invisible zipper foot and have only ever put them in using it.

It is amazing tbh. Absolutely perfect every time. I have stopped buying skirts and dresses since I bought it. I do sew the zip in place with an ordinary zipper foot first and then sew down the teeth bit with the other one.

If you are happy with it then don't bother buying one!

@ STDG - my sister and I got the giggles just telling the chap in the fabric shop that we couldn't find the invisible zips. He stayed completely deadpan while pointing us at the right shelf. One day we'll grow up!

Thanks Lavender - I will hold off a while and see whether I am using enough of them to make it worthwhile. I am making an Oliver+S dress for my DD and although it's moderately complicated, I have to say the instructions are excellent, which helped a lot with the outcome of the zip I think!

The feet for my machine are really overpriced ... but I justified it by making one velvet a line cord skirt for £15 whereas the similar one I bought previously was £55!

I have bought so many feet for my machine - but I love it all! Sad but true.

Thing is that I wouldn't want to wear anything that wasn't spot on so if I didn't do it perfectly I would just waste the fabric, again, sad but true.

it depends on what zip foot you have, some machines use a skinny zip foot www.j-shop.co.uk/product/18/adjustablezipperfootpipingfoot, if have this version you don't need one. It's not impossible to use a regualr foot, Burda have a good tutorial www.burdastyle.com/techniques/how-to-insert-an-invisible-zipper-without-an-invisible-zipper-foot and if you invest in an invisable foot Colette patterns have the best tutorial ever - www.coletterie.com/tutorials-tips-tricks/tutorial-installing-an-invisible-zipper.
One tip is to never just pin the zip, if you tack it in place it is easier and as its for the zip and never seen you can leave in the tacking stitches.

I never use one. I've always used a standard adjustable zipper foot. I also do the seam before the zipper using this method
