no need for a kit, I found a book and just had a go (not in print anymore or would rec). Sunday Morning Quilts is good, or just head to your local library. Do you want to use the sewing machine or stitch by hand?

Just started this hobby myself. Check out the missourri star quilt and gourmet quilter on YouTube. Brilliant for getting started. I also bought some second hand books from Amazon. I bought some very cheap fabric from the market to practice . Good luck, hope you enjoy.

Hi Poppy, I would prefer to use the sewing machine, mt hand stitch is ok but i don't know whether it would be good enough. Do you need a special machine or is a standard one ok? Wink

Standard machine. Don't get a kit as such but get a bundle of pre-cut fabric (you can get strips called a jelly roll, or squares sold as a 'layer cake' or charm pack or various other slightly sickly names) as it's easier to get good results if the fabric is accurately cut, and cutting accurately is easiest with a mat, ruler and rotary cutter, but you won't want to buy them for your first quilt in case you don't enjoy it.

There are lots of good tutorials and blogs online. And buy fabric somewhere like Cottonpatch.
