Does anyone do calligraphy?

I fancy giving it a try. Unfortunately I can't sign up for an evening class due to DH's long working hours so can anyone recommend any online (free) resources? What brands are best for basic equipment? Thanks.

I use Sheaffer pens, as regards main equipment.

I'm not sure about online resources. I learnt calligraphy, several styles, as a child, self taught from books, copying into grids, and much repetition.

I did it for about 7 years using "proper" dip pens which are fairly cheap.

Hi, thanks for your responses. I think I'd like to try the dip pens. Will see if I can get something decent but cheap from Amazon.

I use a dip pen occasionally, they do give nice results once you master how to use them. I would recommend a fountain pen for a complete beginner, however.

I learnt with a dip pen so have never had a problem with them.

Bumping as I'm interested in this too.

I've bookmarked this, with a view to learning calligraphy when I have the time

That website looks good. I'm going to throw caution to the wind and get a dip pen!

I may join you. I am looking for a hobby that's not too expensive that I can do at home as we now have a baby so getting out to a class would be a pain.
