What wool is best to use.....

DD (8yrs) is a wheelchair user some of the time. Yesterday she was shivering so I am on a mission to knit / crochet her a blanket to keep her cosy. The wind whipped right through her fleece cover yesterday.

What wool is best to use for warmth, durability and washability. Also need something that will keep its colour good. Thanks x

Style craft always comes highly recommended. It's acrylic but not harsh or squeaky .

Stylecraft is cheap, comes in brilliant colours and washes well.

If you want something warm I'd use a chunky knit as it works up very quickly and is super warm. I find a waffle stitch is super squishy and feels warmer than a ripple or granny stripe.
If she only uses the when chair part of the time could you make a poncho that way it covers from the shoulders and won't get whipped up by the wind

If you want something warm I wouldn't use an acrylic. I would use something with some wool in it. If you get one with about 25% wool it will still machine wash but be much warmer.

Defo something with wool in it. My default wool for most things is Diploma Gold. Washes well, hard wearing and keeps its shape.

Agree diploma gold is nice. Also jarol heritage and actually the 400g big ball Aran blends aren't bad and are cheap.

And get a waterproof/ windproof foot muff. Taking the wind factor yor will help loads

Knitted or crocheted fabric won't keep the wind out - it's even worse than fleece. She needs an outer layer which is windproof. I'd expect this is a solved problem for wheelchair users, or would it be practical for her to wear an ordinary windproof/waterproof jacket and trousers large enough to fit warm layers underneath?

I did a stylecraft special dk crochet blanket backed with fleece which is lovely and warm.

I'd also recommend drops merino which is beautiful wool and again backed with fleece would provide some added warmth.

Fleece fabric can be bought cheaply on eBay and I just used blanket stitch to sea it on, no hemming required.

Thanks for replies. DD and I spent ages looking online for colours she liked so we have opted for Stylecraft DK as ok to work with and washes well. I will back it with a fleece blanket and hope that will keep her cosy.
