Advice on pricing hand-made cushions please

I've just started making cushions and floor cusions for friends and family with a view to making a little business out of it. I already have a couple of orders for floor cushions but I haven't worked out any prices as yet.
The floor cushions are 36" x 36", so pretty big, and I use quality fabric (not the cheap nasty thin stuff) and wondered if any other mn's could give me any advice on what to charge ? I obviously have to cover the cost of materials which on average is roughly ?25 (until I can source cheaper equal quality cushion pads and fabric).
Also, if anyone has any recommendations of where I can source good quality, good value cushion pads (all sizes) and fabrics, that would be fabaroony !

cost price x 3 plus 17.5%

you can do special deals for friends/family if you want.

I like Clarissa's formula! I used to make handmade things to sell in a market (slightly different target), and I must admit, I priced them at what I thought people would fork out, for a Christmas present. In those days, that was about 15 pounds. My costs were less than 2 pounds per item, but they were decorated with fabulous original illustrations

How much do you pay for your cushions now?

Tillyboo · 10/10/2006 18:50

Thanks for the feedback everyone

At the moment I pay £8.95 per pad , 36" x 36" size (polyester filling) as I've just done a couple of floor cushions & I could get them locally But I can't pay this if I'm working on cost price x 3 plus 17.5%. It just wouldn't be viable. I'm sure I can find cheaper options without compromising on quality.
Zippitippitoes - have you any suggestions as to where I can get less expensive pads ?
I have to take into account what I think people will pay otherwise i won't have any customers.

I got a couple of large floor cushions from Ikea... you would have to check the website for their prices .

I used to make soft furnishings - generally I would price based on the cost of materials plus an approximate hourly rate for me. In the bill or estimate I would put the price of the things I was providing and give customers an opportunity to provide their own if they prefered. I nearly always used material provided by the customer.
