Any other sock knitters out there? I'm just starting the second sock of my first pair.

I have done. Not my favourite project. How are you doing them? I want to do two at the time, bottom up, one of these days. Just because I never have done.

One at a time on dpns top down. Can you do at a time with one ball of wool? I always seem to get in a muddle with two balls.

I would like to make socks but DPNs hate me, and I them. Anyone use the magic loop or whatever it's called on circulars?

Cleio · 27/11/2014 13:57

I only wear hand knit socks now Smile

Also use DPNs and knit from the top down. I sometimes use a fancy pattern but mostly I prefer to knit just plain socks. I generally have a sock on the go as well as a more complex project, usually a lace shawl or something. They are my relaxing, mindless knitting project. Also handy to bring places as nice and compact.

I have done two at a time on one long circular, although two circs is quite a good method as well. You can use one ball of yarn, particularly if it's wound into a centre-pull cake, as then it's quite easy to use both ends. What I've done before though is use two balls of yarn and put them into zip lock bags, so they get far less tangled. If you don't do that, you need to put one on either side of you, and/or have one draped around your neck.

I've reverted to doing socks one at a time because I have been really struggling to find a sock pattern I could get on with. Nothing more depressing than doing all that work and then finding the sock is too wide or baggy at the ankle or whatever. Currently I'm doing brainless by Yarnissima and it's the first one I've done with a gusset that's really snug - no hole at the top. I'm getting v bored of doing the leg bit but have a 100g ball of Zauberball I've split into two so am just keeping going til the first ball runs out.

Now of course I have to face Second Sock Syndrome, I don't know if I can face doing the other one (which is why two at a time is a good method!).

That's a good tip about the zip lock bags tribpot. I might try that. Thanks.
