Where do you get your fabric and yarn from?

Are there any online shops that are good?

Currently I mostly get yarn from John Lewis but wonder if there are better places.

I've not done much sewing but my Mum is going to teach me some things when she's here for Christmas so I'd like to know good places to order fabric from (apart from Remnant Kings, which is the best place I know).

I mostly try and support local shops, I can usually find something that suits fabric wise since I'm never doing anything that exciting with it.

For wool again I like to try and support my local shops (rural area- they need the business) but I do knit and crochet alot so if local shop doesn't have what I want I use blacksheepwools.com they usually ave decent offers on.

I like to try to support independents, hand dyers but the convenience of a bricks and mortar shop to look at colour sometimes forces me into JL. I try not to use deramoresa s they are putting everyone else out of business but sometimes it is just inevitable...

For internet purchases I love wollmeise (German dyer who does crazy crazy colurs ) and for more sane stuff Old Maiden Aunt who works out of East Kilbride. My local yarn shop In London has some amazing stuff and the Edinburgh yarn scene is very vibrant.

Fabric wise I use raystitch which is local and some online places - hulu, eclectic maker and sewing studio spring to mind.

I don't knit and we don't have any fabric shops locally anymore so most is bought online unless I can wrangle a day trip somewhere.

Online comes from Fabricland, Ditto fabrics, Stone fabrics, whitelodge fabrics, croft mills, ebay, fabric dreams, my fabrics. All are mostly dressmaking fabrics.

Woolwarehouse for yarn and occasionally Deramores and Black Sheep Wools, sometimes I'll browse through Kemps clearance section.

I've only been in the UK for 12 months so haven't bought huge amounts of fabric, but what I have bought has been online from Brighton Sewing Centre, who have an amazing range of quilting cottons, and Seamstar, who have a great monthly craft club too. Yarn I buy from iKnit in Waterloo, London.
I also have a local sewing machine repair shop that sells a very limited range of fabric, that i buy when I want something ordinary like plain solid colour poplin.

Thanks red buttonhole - loop is my local yarn store but the mark up for OMA and WM is pretty big hence I buy direct. If you are based in the SE a trip to loop is a particular joy their stock is amazing... I no longer take my credit card after the 300quid wollmeise trip!

I've used enough of both over the years to be familiar with the colours... Or if I haven't I'll have a friend who has used a particular colour...
