Sewing stockings from old jumpers

I found these instructions for making stockings from old jumpers on pinterest. I have a couple of suitable jumpers, and would like to have a go. I'm used to sewing tightly woven things like cotton. I am guessing sewing knitted/similar things is different, but I don't really know what I need to different? Will I want to use a different stitch? To alter the tension on the machine? Sorry if these are silly questions, and thanks in advance.

I always machine stitch childrens jumpers and cardigans to finish them . Straight stitch is fine , as instructed machine before cutting out . I would then zigzag the raw edges.

Thanks, that's really helpful. And not too scary- I'll have to actually give it a go!
