Tailored wrap around skirt pattern

I am looking for one. I have some lovely pieces of harris tweed fabric and want a proper pattern (rather than making it up which I would do with a cheaper fabric). Don't really want to spend the time making a toile.

I just want a tailored skirt with a button on the inside on the flap and button on the outside on the outer flap if that makes sense. The only one I have found is this one which isn't really what I want as it has a yoke.

Tilly and the Buttons does an A line wraparound, think it is called Miette.

Thanks, I have just looked at that one and its not really what I want as I want a tailored look (that one is lovely but flared and more summery). It wouldn't work with harris tweed.

Only just seen your request. If you can wait a day or two I will have a look through my patterns (hundreds). I'm pretty sure I have one from the 80's. A bit like a flat kilt?

Thank you, yes I am certain my mum would have had the pattern I want in the 80s. I went to my lovely local sewing shop and looked through pattern books this week, nothing.

The owner suggested I just pin it and make it from one piece of fabric with darts but I think I would prefer to use a straight skirt pattern and cut two fronts, reducing the second one a bit.

I have found one! It's a Style 'Sew Simple' 2255. It looks longer than we are used to but shortening the pattern would be easy.
Suggested fabrics include wool/cotton blends, surah, silk twill, fine wool crepe. Google the pattern and see what you think.

I don't think my fabric would work with a flared skirt style. It is a medium weight wool tweed. I think it will have to be straighter or a line at the most. Also, I don't think I would have enough for that lovely flare.

I might have a go with the two fronts thing from an ordinary skirt pattern.

Yes, that's the one. I agree with your decision. I don't think it will work with a lovely Harris tweed or anything of 'winter' weight.

Lambs, if you see this I have made a skirt and it looks fab so far!

I bought a brown/autumnal check tweed type fabric from my local shop for £8 for a metre to have a go on. I decided to follow the owners advice and have a go with a one piece skirt. I have just added two long darts at the side and three along the back and it is a great fit, I will play with darts in the front after dinner. Amazing and so cheap.

I usually buy my casual clothes from somewhere like White Stuff, this would be a £60 skirt in there.

I am going to use something floral to line the waistband and will do an invisible hem by hand. I used three of the colours in the tweed in my overlocker and sewed the top and bottom in a picot stitch. I have used the edge of the fabric for the left front finishing and it looks really good.

Will definitely make one in the v expensive tweed, really pleased and it has only taken me 40 mins so far so a 2 hour skirt.

Lavender, that sounds great. I do think a tweed needs to be quite straight.

Are you going to secure the inner right hand side at all? I like the idea of the selvage edge but be careful when you put the front darts in that it doesn't go off grain. It could just make it hang oddly. A wearable muslin! win,win.
I think that I saw a skirt in Crew clothing that seems like the skirt you are making. Again, around the £60 mark.

Nearly finished - the front darts worked well, only two in the back, not three. It looks great, just need to do the hand stitching of the hem and top stitch the very flowery inside of the waist before I hand sew that down.

It is all completely straight and level which is great. I don't often sew clothes for myself because I am a perfectionist, I stick to 'utility' sewing, roman blinds, costumes and the odd pair of trousers for my daughter, etc., etc..

I was thinking of either a hook and eye on the inner, do you think that will work? I saw a leather buckle thing in the sewing shop that I thought I might use on the outside if I liked the skirt (I had my sensible head on and didn't want to spend the cost of the fabric if I didn't like the result).

A hook and eye would be fine if you are talking about the larger trouser type hook and bar, not the tiny one for a neck fastening.

I used to sew everything I wore when I was a poor student and have acquired quite a stash over 30 years so seem to have hooks and eyes of varying sizes.

I gave up sewing for me once I could afford to buy lovely clothes and worked so hard that I never had any time but I have enjoyed making this and am really pleased I did it - might wear it tonight although I have got a halloween cape to finish first!

I did buy a new Bernina machine last year and have bought quite a bit of fabric with a view to making myself a few things. Simple tunics are another thing that I easily spend £80 on that I could make in nice fabrics for £15 so that will probably be my next task.

It is finished - I am really pleased with it apart from one thing - the waistband is a bit bulkier than I would like when it is on.

Not sure if there is anything I can about that really as it is well trimmed and pressed and the inner bit is just simple polycotton with a very thin bit of interfacing.

It will be OK with a jumper on but I wouldn't want to expose the waistband - shame.
