Creating art like Charlie and Lola style - any advice?

I just want to fill a blank space with a pattern that I have scanned, like Lauren Child uses patterns to fill Lola's dresses and puts wallpapers in the backgrounds of her illustrations.
I've got 2003 software on my laptop though, any ideas?

Do you mean like creating a mask so that the pattern only appears in certain places?

I would use photoshop and use layer masks for that sort of thing.

Ah thank you. I don't have photo shop so I couldn't do it, I ended up asking a graphic design mate to do it for me!!
