Please suggest durable chunky yarn for crocheting socks

I would love to crochet socks but only using chunky yarn as I do not really like using a small hook. I wonder whether there is anything at John Lewis. Usually I crochet short socks/booties, something like this, easy and fast. jerwife3.wordpress.com/2006/12/11/toe-up-crocheted-socks/

Thank you. Flowers

I have nearly forgotten about my thread. Still would be very grateful for recommending chunky yarn suitable for crocheting socks. For some reason my younger DS gets holes in his socks (heals) within a few months or is this normal?

I've never crocheted socks, so can't give any advice, but they have lots of suitable yarns here: Wool Warehouse

Thank you ThreeFroglets. Nice store. Even attic24 brand.

i've only ever made socks with 4-ply, never chunky. but based my experience i would use something that contains some nylon (e.g. 75% wool, 25% nylon) as this will make them more durable

heels are a weak point, so they do wear out. does your ds wear the socks without shoes? i only ever wear my handmade socks with slippers or shoes because if you walk around the house with just the socks on they will wear out more quickly

Hi I use a lot of woodcraft new fashion chunky for blankets though not socks. It's acrylic but quite soft and really good value for money with a decent colour range.

I crochet and I have to say, I don't think you can use chunky for socks. I am currently crocheting socks using a fingering weight wool with a 3.5 hook. And even so, they feel a little thick. They will be house socks as they are too thick to go in shoes. Chunky would really not work. -sorry.

Thank you everyone. I think I will consider wool which contains some nylon as our was pure wool. It was not extremely chunky. Something like this www.woolfactoryonline.co.uk/king-cole-magnum-chunky-100g-ball---damson-345-was-350-1294-p.asp Thank you for the website janknitti. I used size 3 mm hook to crochet the socks. I have attached the photo of the socks I made last year. I need to make one more pair.

They are for walking on the carpet.

v cute. i think if they are for walking on carpet then it's inevitable that they will wear through due to the friction. but that's a good thing in some ways because they are well-worn and used and loved

I use a 4.5mm hook with sock yarn to make my socks so nothing too tiny or fiddly.

PetulaGordino · 30/09/2014 19:57

You could use sock yarn held double too, which would make it about dk weight

optimistikcolouristik · 01/10/2014 11:13

Thank you Petula and Lonecat. I did not consider double yarn. I thought it would be too fiddly. I should try. I think it is my youngest one only who manages to make holes too soon :) Nylon might help.
