hello knitters please help! what's the best yarn for knitting socks?

I've decided to dig out my knitting needles and have a go at knitting a pair of socks. I've found a couple of sock patterns I'd like to try, but they are American and I can't find the wool that they recommend. I've had a look on various websites and don't much like the multi-coloured sock yarn available. I'd much rather knit in plain colours - so my question is, which is the best yarn for socks? obviously I want them to be comfy and don't want them going into holes after a couple of weeks wear!

having never knitted socks in my life but buying the sock yarn from angelyarns to try it out one day, i would suggest alpaca wool. the fairtrade artesano label also available from angelyarns.
