Make your own goo/slime?

Anyone tried this and have a fool proof recipe?

I'm hoping to make individual pots to give out as party favours for DS birthday party next month but I'd like to know it definitely works..........

I wish I knew too as I recently went to purchase borax but is no longer available to the public in the UK.

Really? You can't buy borax any more? That's a bit rubbish! On the off chance you find some, maybe from an unscrupulous old-school chemist...

Mix 100ml PVA glue with 100ml cold water and a splash of obnoxious food colouring, till it's smooth (kids can do this bit). Bring 50ml water to the boil, then remove from the heat and stir in 1tsp borax. (Sensible, older kids can do this bit). Pour the borax solution into the PVA glue solution and give it a quick stir. (Sensible younger kids can do the stirring). Hook out the lump and knead it on a wipeable surface.

Not all PVA glues are equal. Better quality glue makes better quality slime.

I know, wanted to make some laundry detergent, chemist told me it's no longer available. Whatever next eh?

You can but borax online. We did, for precisely this purpose (even though I am dying to know what the nefarious use is, no one would give me a recipe)

Used to be quite ok - used for eye drops. Probably the nanny state not wanting people to brew their own, just in case they don't use freshly boiled water and sterile conditions etc. It's possible the pharmacist selling it to them could be prosecuted under H&S laws.

Lots of things get banned:
Sassafrass oil - killed nits - 'cos used to produce E
Medecines with chlorofrom - causes cancer, but helps you cough and spit as it widens the 'tubes', but they allow registered addicts to have them (or used to).
Saltpetre for making curing salt - used to home-cure ox tongue, added to prevent botulism, added in xs by manufacturers to give a lovely pink colour in sausages and other meat products.

Off to play with boiling wax in the privacy of my own home - while it's still legal.

Will a borax substitute work, do you think? That's all I can find....

Borax has been linked to infertility and birth defects. I wouldn't use it.

I wouldn't (and don't) use borax.

Here's how I make mine:

Ingredients

PVA Glue (testing may need to be done first as different glues vary! make sure it is PVA though)

Shaving Foam (optional, but makes slime fluffy)

Paint (optional again)

Formil Biological detergent from Lidl (the green one! this is a substitute for borax which reacts with the glue)

OR use Almat Non Bio from Aldi instead of Formil

OR use Contact lens solution with half a teas spoon of baking soda

Method:
Mix PVA, foam and paint in a bowl.
Then, slowly add your activator (Formil, Almat or solution). Do this little by little until the glue clumps up. You should notice slime starting to form!

Once you have the basic method you can go ahead and practise this a few more times until you've found the perfect slime. Hope this helps everyone!
