Crochet for 11 year old?

Does anybody know if this book would be suitable for an 11 year old wanting to learn to crochet? Was thinking of getting it as a birthday present together with some hooks and thread. I'd welcome recommendations for thread too please.

Thanks!

That book looks fab and is a great price. The hooks will be fine for a beginner - I had metal hooks for years and have only switched to bamboo recently due to stiff hands.

If you are feeling flush then I would get a packet of balls of yarn in different colours like this just to have a few colours to do multicoloured granny squares or stripy projects. If that is too expensive then the same yarn can be bought as individual balls. I know I would appreciate 4 or more different colours just to be able to practice colour changing.

There is a smaller pack of chunky yarn on the same website but it is quite possible that many beginners projects are in DK (double knit) yarn.

A yarn needle might be a good addition to the present too.

You don't need thread, you need a 4mm hook and DK yarn (Stylecraft is nice and good value) and I think I'd start with just a few colours in case learning to crochet doesn't work out.

I think I have the same set of hooks and they're absolutely fine. Most of the sized won't get used for a while though - I rarely use anything much bigger or smaller than a 4mm one.

Thanks. Would DMC petra be the right kid of yarn? That's what our local shop has in stock and I need it before Sunday! Or would something like this be any good?

Agree Owl, just a few colours to start with sounds perfect.

i don't think starting with thread would be a good idea, or anything that requires a v small hook size.

as owlcapone says go for dk weight (as per the wool in your link) and a larger hook size like 4mm
