Home made dolly bobbin?

I'm starting a knitting group at school for 7 and 8 year olds. I thought we'd start with French knitting. I don't think I can persuade the powers that be to fund 10 x £4 for a dolly bobbin each so thought we could make our own.
I've seen on YouTube ones made with lolly sticks and a toilet roll. Has anyone tried this? I worried it would make the knitting too loose. Someone else suggested a cotton reel and nails but I'm worried about the ends of the nails being a bit sharp and the knitting then being very thin. The idea is we will coil the knitting around and stitch it to make a coaster.
Would be really grateful for some tips on ways of doing this.

Could you ask for a £3 contribution each to the class and buy them bulk on e bay? Some nice ones there and they look safer with loops not nails. Then they can practice at home and pass on their skills x
