Fabric to make a summer-weight nursery blanket?

So I quite fancy giving my sewing machine a proper whirl and making a blanket for DS to use at nursery. He's got a fleecy one at the moment but it's beginning to get a bit warm for that.

I like the idea of using a fun patterned cotton for the top, but don't know what fabric would be best to back it with? Can anyone help recommend something suitable please? I'm pretty new to sewing so I don't really know different types of fabrics very well yet!

Brushed cotton or flannel for the back?

I made one for DS of purple cotton both sides with a giant green monkey on the front (stolen off an old Ikea pillowcase and appliqued on!), the monkey is swinging off giant purple ricrac Grin if I can lay my hands on it, I'll take a pic and upload it.

Double gauze is lovely. Look at The Village Haberdashery website or Miss Matatabi on Etsy. The latter has lots of gorgeous Nani Iro prints.
