oil cloth/iron on vinyl - table cloth project

My children and I have decorated a large piece of fabric (table cloth size) with fabric pens and I'm keen to make it water proof/stain proof.
Have seen some iron on vinyl stuff but not sure what its like. I would really like it to be more like oil cloth and a bit more flexible.
Any ideas or experience crafty people?

I used some iron on vinyl about 15 years ago to waterproof some quilting cotton to put round the outside of a washbag. After a while the vinyl cracked at the corners and I eventually got fed up and peeled all the remaining vinyl off.

I may not have done it properly, and the stuff may have improved since then, but I wasn't too impressed.

Iron on vinyl is great for smaller projects but in my experiences it's really not robust enough for a tablecloth. It does split and crackle if it's bunched about too much.

what about a clear plastic layer over the top that isn't attached, our dunelm has rolls of it with all the oilcloth/vinyl rolls?
