Easier to crochet than knit?

I have recently learned to knit, and want to knit a baby blanket for a friend, however, on Very Pink Stacey says that it's easy and quicker to crochet one. Has anyone had experience of this? Or am I kidding myself?

Btw, I am thinking of a ripple blanket if I did crochet one. Is this realistic?

Crocheting is certainly meant to be quicker, especially for something like a blanket. I can knit, I can't crochet (yet!) myself but everyone I know who can says if you can knit, you can definitely crochet.

i'd say they are about the same, but for making things crochet is quicker and easier to pick up and put down.

just watch where you learn from, techniques are the same but the stitches are named differently UK and US

we have chain, double crochet, half treble, treble, double treble (ch, dc,htr,t/tr,dt/dtr)
they have chain, single crochet, treble, double treble....etc

thanks for the advice, I will have a look at a couple of sources. It looks trickier than knitting to me, but I love The ripple blanket and am so tempted by the quickness!

There are loads of teach yourself crochet videos on YouTube. As Catsmamma says just watch out for the terminology differences between US and UK tutorials. The stitches are the same - it is just what they are called that differs.

I can knit and crochet and would much prefer to make a crochet blanket. I agree that it grows faster than knitting.

I can't knit, only crochet, so can't comment on which is easier.

Woolly that is so kind of you! I am very touched. Unfortunately, I am not near you. There is a beginners crochet course at a wool shop near to me, but its evenings which dosent work for me childcare-wise, so I was rather hoping just to have a go from youtube tutorials, just to see if its something I could do.

I will check out Attic24's tutorial, but Im better from video than pictures.

Crochet is much quicker to progress than knitting, though not particularly easier.

I do find crochet less stressful than knitting though. I like the fact you only have one stitch on the hook, rather than a whole row of knitting. It makes pulling your work back because of errors much simpler.

If I was going to make a blanket I would definitely choose crochet. And rippling is very addictive. I am on my 4th ripple blanket since I learnt to crochet 15 months ago!

I can knit and I learned to crochet in December and I much prefer it. I find it less tiring because I move the needles quite a lot when I knit, which makes my arms ache if it's something heavy.

I used a Craftsy class called Crochet Lab which was excellent, very clear and easy to follow. Don't pay full price though, they are always having sales so register with the and add the class to your wishlist and they will email you when it's on sale.

Ripple is ok once you get the hang of it, but I would recommend that you do a few practice swatches first, because it's heartbreaking to rip back a few rows of a blanket if you go wrong.

I can do both. I only started to crochet recently. I think I prefer ithe latter as it doesn't unravel.
