I am learning to crochet and would like to know how to read patterns but I just can't work it out.

I would be really grateful if someone could translate the following for me as I really want to make a flower garland.

ROUND 2. 4 ch, (1 dtr, 2 ch) into next st, 1 dtr into next st, (1 dtr, 2 ch) into next st; rep from to end of round, join round with a ss into top of 4 ch.

I understand the abbreviations but don't understand the brackets.

Can anyone help please!!! Many thanks in advance x

The brackets are telling you to do those stitches into the next single stitch - so (1 dtr, 2 ch) mean that you do your double treble, then 2 chain, before moving on to the next stitch - which will have 1 dtr in it, followed by the next dtr + 2ch, in the next stitch.
So effectively you will have crocheted into 3 consecutive stitches, but created 7 new stitches.

I hope that makes sense!

Thanks Animals. I think I'm being a bit thick! So, if I'm starting at the beginning of this round and do a dtr and 2 ch, and move on to the next stitch, how would that stitch have a dtr in it if I hadn't done it yet? Does that make sense?

so... you're going to chain 4 to start with and then 1dtr and chain 2 in the next stitch

then just a dtr in the next stitch

then a dtr and chain 2 in the next stitch

and repeat that to the beginning ,so it'll be dtr in next stitch, dtr chain 2 in next, dtr in next..... til you get to the beginnnig

Ah Cakey and Animals, I get it. I think! Thanks so much for explaining it to me. I shall have a go now.
