Can anyone help with duplicate knitting?

I've got some duplicate knitting to do on a stuffed toy. I've never done duplicate knitting before, but the actual stitches are quite straightforward. What I don't understand is, I'm just using a long strand of yarn, it's not long enough to do the whole thing, so how do I neatly hide the yarn ends when I join a new piece? It's an already stuffed toy, so I can't get to the back of the knitting.

I poke the needle right through the toy, pull the yarn slightly taught and cut it close to the toy, then the tension kind of pulls the cut end back inside the toy. It's not "fastened off" but the stuffing seems to hold it in place. If it's going to be washed/handled lots there might be a better solution.

Thanks Giraffes, that's what I ended up doing in the end, time will tell how long it lasts...
