What is this function for on a sewing machine?

Hi, I’m puzzled by a feature on some Janome sewing machines. It’s called a stop start button. I don’t own a machine yet so can’t look it up in the manual. Is it something really useful? I thought all machines started and stopped.

Is it the one that automatically does a little lock stitch at the start (and end?) of sewing? Or the one that puts the needle down or up and makes sure that it is the same when you stop sewing?

Sone

I have 2 Janome machines. The stop/start button is used when you are using the machine without the foot pedal.

This can be useful at times. I used it a lot when I was getting used to my first machine after a long gap in my sewing "life"!

Whoops
Someone in my sewing class has one of these and I think it allows a few slower stitches to be done without the pedal. I think for starting and stopping.

It just allows you to start and stop without using the pedal. I've only used it a couple of times because you don't have the same variable speed control as with a foot pedal. Not a fan and wouldn't be fussed if it didn't have it as a feature.

I only use it when winding bobbins.

I only use the stop/start button on my machine when its winding a job lot of bobbins or doing embroidery (Brother SE400). I don't like it for actual sewing.

Having said that, DD (age 6) has it on her little machine, she likes it because she's not that good at co-ordinating her feet and hands when sewing yet or sitting still with her feet in one place for long either
