What supplies do you need for embroidery?

Ok, my friend wants to take up embroidery. She has a birthday coming up, so I've bought her vouchers for embroidery class at a local college, but I'd like to give her something to open on the day as well.

Was thinking of putting together a "starting embroidery" set, but no idea what she'd need!

Any suggestions welcome.....

Scissors, specifically for embroidery. They tend to be very very pointy and sharp.
Embroidery needles.
Cards/boxes for storing threads.
Cards with holes in the side (don't know what they are called) where you hang your thread for your current project.
