I am hoping to crochet a table runner in ripple stitch, but wondered if anyone has any ideas about the best wool and how much I will need?

I want something which will wash well, sit nice and flat and does not split when crocheting. I also want some Mad Men-esque colours - 1960's pastels (blues, taupes, browns, yellows and greens). I you watch the opening sequence of Mad Men, you can see all the colours there.

I am thinking a DK. in the past I have always used Rowan handknit cotton. Which is too expensive really and the colours don't work. Any ideas? I have searched and searched and can't seem to find something which fits all my needs.

Have you used DMC PETRA. It seems to be available in quite a few colours and I find it is nice to work with. I have done a couple of table runners in it but not sure if it will give you the look your after, it has quite a silky look too it.
