Knitting squares for a blanket..

I have lots of little bits of wool, my children have requested a bug blanket for the sofa.

How can I make sure they're all the same size?

Any other tips greatly received. I've only ever done scarfs!

Start with one stitch. Increase 1 stitch every row until the side is the size you want it. Then decrease 1 stitch every row until you have one stitch left. The number of stitches you have on the pin and the number of rows you will do when you start decreasing will vary, but the size of the square will not.

Alternatively - use crochet to go round the edge of any squares that are too small and embrace the wonky handmade effect of varying sized squares. You can make a positive feature of it!
