Wooly hugs tiny hearts 2 pattern

Hello, I wonder if anyone can give me some advice? I've been trying to make the tiny hearts linked to from the wooly hugs crochet pattern page. The one that links to cornflower blog. I've made quite a few, but they don't seem quite right. They end up with a large hole in the middle, but also it has suddenly occurred to me, I have assumed the pattern was using English crochet terms, so 3 treble then 3 double crochet, but now I'm wondering if the pattern is using American crochet terms? Thanks for any help :)

I haven't tried this one but it looks like it's US terms to me. Does the hole get smaller if you pull the end tight? Or you could try starting with a magic ring and chain 3 replacing the ch4 start Smile

Thanks for your thoughts :) my hearts are getting better! and I've found better quality wool means the hole isn't as big. I might try doing it the American way tomorrow, although the stitches will be a bit more complicated, and I'll try a magic ring too. Thanks :)
