Prem baby knit question.

A friend has just had her baby DD at 32 weeks, she's doing well but is still very wee at 4lb6.

I've not got much cash to buy a gift, but do have shed loads of wool so wanted to knit her a couple of diddy hats.

What size should I be looking to make? Some patterns for really tiny prem babies say 1-3lb, so I don't need that small. Is there anything comparable to a babies head at that size that I could measure on? Or can anyone recommend a pattern you've used?

I don't want to bother her asking questions about head circumference as I'm pretty sure she has enough on right now!

Not got any practical advice with regards to sizing, but how about doing a ribbed one so you've got plenty of stretch?

RetroHippy · 05/01/2014 12:42

That's a good idea. I've done rolled and ribbed ones for DNiece, but SIL is ungrateful not forthcoming on the success of sizing!

I'm thinking chunky needles for speed too Grin so that should give it a bit more stretch. And I think she's still in NICU so not moving around much.

Actually chunky yarn on a small size may look too bulky. Possibly DK or finer would look better. Sorry if you've already begun/think I'm wrong! Obvs you must do what you think is right! Have you looked on Ravelry for a pattern for a small hat - it may help you with sizing, nit that I think you need a pattern.

Hat one done! Went for DK on 3 3/4 mm needles, CO 50 stitches. Followed this pattern, using the 3-4lb directions as my needles and wool were a wee bit bigger than the size 4, sport weight recommended.

It looks suitably teeny Grin

Might have to put a pic in the pics thread.

Thank you. Just measured and they stretch to just over 30 cm so should fit! In the post this morning.
