why are my edges wonky?! - Knitting query

I have just made my first two garter stitch chunky scarves (thanks everyone who helped my on my previous thread!).

The stitches are nice and even, but the edges are uneven and spoil the neatness of the scarf. It doesn't matter too much as the first two scarves were for me and DD (who is over the moon that mummy actually made a real life scarf!), but I would now like to make one as an Xmas gift, so want to improve but I don't know where I've gone wrong.

Can anyone help please?

Instead of knitting the first stitch on each row, slip it onto needle instead. Not at the end of each row just the beginning, should look more even.

some bits about neat edges, selvedges.
I like to slip the first st purlwise then knit across to the end. Gives a nice neat edge. I don't slip the first st for things I will seam later though.

I agree, slip it purlwise rather than knit, much neater

Thanks for the advice and links, unfortunately, I am rubbish with diagrams, I will look for youtube clips on this matter, but at least I know what I've done wrong and that it can improve!

Knitting is always a bit wibbly. The thing that helps on almost every item is blocking. Slip stitch does create a nice edge, though.

Thanks tribot, i did block my dd's scarf actually and it was much better after this.
