how to seal salt dough decorations?

I've made some cute tree decorations. Want to seal them so they last. Have tried PVA glue as suggested by the instructions I followed but it makes the paint and permanent marke I used to decorate them smudge...
Am I doing something wrong or should I use something else?

what type? like you get in homebase? sorry, I'm a complete novice at this... :)

I made some flat salt dough star decorations about 6 years ago; they were painted with acrylic paint then half were sealed with a spray on clear varnish I bought from homebase. The rest I just couldn't be bothered to spray. They all still look absolutely fine (got them down from the loft yesterday). I know my mum still has a set of salt dough decorations made for her by one of her primary school kids when she was a teacher - that kid is now 30, they were painted with poster paint and not sealed, again are still totally fine. The main risk is them getting damp, you could use some of those silica gel packets in the box where you store them if they are going somewhere which might be damp. Also I wrap them in tissue paper to protect any corners. But if I was making them again I wouldn't bother with sealing them unless I wanted the shiny look.

moggle - I couldn't find spray varnish at homebase but got some household varnish in a small tin. think it could get messy though so might return it and leave them unglazed if they'll last ok if kept dry.
