Advice please on buying wool for xmas presents

I am clueless about knitting and other such crafty things but have a couple of relatives who like knitting.
Would a ball of nice wool be a nice present or is it pretty useless because you can't make anything with one ball of wool?
What could a nice (smallish) present be?

I'd love to receive a ball of nice wool as a present, something a bit different or luxurious such as alpaca yarn which is so so soft.

There is a book 'One Skein' by Leigh Radford which has a few ideas for small projects.

a 100g hank of nice wool is always useful. natural dye studio, eden cottage yarn, and pretty much any wool stocked by Tangled Yarn would make lovely presents.
or a ball of sock wool. Zauberball are interesting and about a tenner.

What sort of budget are you looking at? What do they like making? I love a bit of window shopping

I was thinking around a tenner. I think they make a variety of things. I've had baby clothes from one and a bag from the other.

A sock wool is your best bet I think - 100g will be enough for a shawl or a hat or a baby cardi easily. Some comes in 50g balls, some in 100g hanks or balls. A single 50g would be a bit useless though.

There's a 25% voucher for Hobbycraft somewhere on tinterweb at the moment, and they do 3 for 2 on all wool - they don't have much choice for Naice wool but plenty of everyday and quite nice stuff. If you have a local wool shop they will be able to sell you something nice, usually. If you give me a town I can look for a good shop. Or John Lewis has nice wool too. (pm if you want)

Online - Millions of good wool shops TBH. Get Knitted, Cucumberpatch, Maple Tree Yarn, Great British Yarns, McADirect, Black Sheep Wools. May be tricky to order online if you don't know what you are looking for though.

But mostly, as long as it costs more than £2 a ball it will mostly likely be fine. Usually, the dearer ones are nicer but I wouldn't buy very expensive unless you know their taste.
