Has anyone tried decorating mugs/plates etc with Sharpie pens?

If you make a mistake, can you wash it off and start again before you bake it or is it permanent the second you draw on it? I want to get the kids to decorate some plain white mugs, but if they make a mistake will I be able to wash it off?

I've read many mixed reviews on this. I've bought a pack of sharpies and a cheap plate to experiment on but haven't as yet. Hopefully someone will be along in a mo to pass on the method.

You can wipe it off. Baby wipes (no surprise) work well.

I didn't have much luck with the marker staying on after baking. I've read mixed reviews though. Apparently it is hit and miss with the mug, etc you use.

It will rub off with the help of a bit of brillo etc.

We use sharpie all the time to label radios (walkie talkies) by writing onto white gaffer tape. It rubs off within a day of being jostled against a rigger's trousers.

I did after seeing it on Pinterest. The problem isn't rubbing it off, it's getting it to stay. The 'baking it' part doesn't work at all. It will wash off as soon as you wash it. Don't bother honestly.

Proper ceramic pens aren't particularly expensive...

how annoying, I wish I'd started this thread before I bought a pack of Sharpies :)

I will look in to ceramic pens.

I'm with you. I saw it all over Pinterest so invested in a load of sharpies. Ah well.

Yellow moon sells ceramic pens. Will be baking some mugs tomorrow using these, will try to remember to update you on how it goes.

HF - get a pack of Shrinkies from eBay and use the sharpies on them to make badges etc?

Can also check out Craftgawker.com for more ideas with sharpies?
