personalising towels

I am making hooded towels for my dc for Christmas. Planning to use them for swimming so thought I would personalise them.

I like the look of this but have virtually no experience of appliqué. I have some offcuts of towel which I can practice on but wondering how big should the letters be, upper or lower case. One pattern or multi coloured. Was planning to use dc old clothes or should I use new material. Only a month to do it all.

Or of course any recommendations for easier solutions. I can't do letters on my machine though.

The size and colour of the letters is whatever you are happy with.

I applique a lot - bondaweb is your friend along with a disappearing marker, have a look on youtube for a tutorial.

Basically, I outline the design on the back of the fabric (in reverse) iron on the bondaweb rough side down, peel off the smooth backing, cut the shape out out, iron onto base base fabric then sew round the edges.

I have just done appliqué eyes before! Is it easier to do big things or small ones? I guess capitals might be easier as it is straight lines. Most of the time when I sew you can't see the stitches so I'm a bit apprehensive. I think I will have a practice and see how it looks.
